This has been a banner year for Minnesota jazz releases. We are bursting at the seams with new sounds from Kavyesh Kaviraj, Take That Back, Zacc Harris and more. Another release that deserves to be on the short list for best release of the year is L.A. Buckner and BiG HOMiE’s new outing Norfside. We have already highlighted the lead single “Fireflies” and today we are turning our attention to “Vengeance is Mine Saith The Lord.” When you simply press play on the tune the energy and ferocity of the track explodes. It is a powerhouse tune with tremendous volume and intensity from his elite band. I had the honor of seeing it performed live at the Capri Theater and L.A. Buckner provided some background about his inspiration to write the tune. Buckner recounted the loathsome history of the father of modern gynecology, Marion James Sims. The written word doesn’t do tribute to the disgust Buckner used to explain Sims’ propensity for administering horrendously painful tests on black women without any anesthesia. The tune takes on a new dimension when getting my head around what Buckner was considering when he sat down to write. It’s a powerful statement and a breathtaking song.
Hot New Local Singles highlights new, local songs. Minnesota has a lot of great jazz, funk, soul, and jazz- adjacent music, and Jazz88 is highlighting what is fresh.
