Vocalist Tommy Boynton has arrived with his first album tackling jazz standards. Boynton moved to the Twin Cities about two years ago and keeps busy as a member of the Four Freshmen, the celebrated long-running vocal quartet now based partially out of the Twin Cities. Boynton has a clean, earnest voice that packs a playful, romantic punch. On “I’m Gonna Lock My Heart (And Throw Away the Key),” the Eaton/Shand standard made famous by Billie Holiday, Boynton and the band of Twin Cities A-listers deliver the goods with his fellow Four Freshmen member Jake Baldwin turning out a nice trumpet solo and sharing the spotlight with Twin Cities sax-mainstay Peter Goggin. The band sounds light-hearted and Boynton’s sweet but melancholy vocal floats over the top. It’s hard to imagine not enjoying this tune the minute it hits the speakers.
