Jake Baldwin and Ted Godbout stay busy enough playing as sidemen that I consider it a godsend when they find time to work as leaders. When trumpet player Jake Baldwin and pianist Ted Godbout realized they had a pile of originals they had never recorded, they decided to connect with some great players and read down the charts. The resulting album, ADULTS, is a relaxed affair with a set of players comfortable enough to let the music come first, the interplay come second and the chops come third. The first tune is a Baldwin original called “Cornflower Blue.” The song is Jake Baldwin’s first ever attempt at writing his own music from way back in eighth grade. But the chords are lovely and the melody is simple and hummable. Way to go 8th grade Jake! I tip my hat to bassist Dan Carpel for getting in and out with a tasteful bass solo that keeps the momentum going. And Ted Godbout sounds rock solid as usual on the piano; turning out supportive comping throughout the song and covering a lot of terrain on his solo while always staying focused on the groove at hand.
