Cody Steinmann had a banner year in 2024. The Twin Cities based guitar player made connections with iconic musicians like JD Allen and cemented his reputation as one of the most prolific guitarists in the Twin Cities jazz scene. On his album Confined Spaces Steinmann uses his long-running trio with Chris Bates on bass and Abinnet Berhanu on drums to turn out a disc composed primarily of Steinmann’s originals. On the track “Dodo Birds Aren’t Dumb Humans Are” you can hear the chemistry the trio has fostered in their years of collaboration. The top flight rhythm section navigates the arrangement while giving Steinmann the room to soar on the guitar. The record is full of supportive playing and ensemble-oriented improvisation from the trio. Who is to say what is next for Steinmann? He keeps a lot of irons in the fire, but hopefully this trio will be part of the plan because they have something special going on!
