Hot New Local Single: Purple

Purple Funk Metropolis is back in action with their new single “Liquid Death.” The veteran group has navigated many different facets of funk music and on this one I hear a deep connection to Afrobeat. “Liquid Death” has the sprightly guitar interplay, rapid hand percussion patterns and powerful horn blasts I associate with the father of Afro-beat himself, Fela. Plus, keyboardist Sam Rosenstone’s use of the Yamaha Portasound sounds so spot in for the feel. In addition to the main groove, PFM also ushers in a more relaxed and psychedelic breather section which helps the song develop across awesome solos on organ, flute and trumpet. And it’s getting hard to call him a secret weapon since everyone seems to be finding out about him, but guitarist Evan Slack closes out the tune with a variation on the theme that kept me bouncing. Liquid Death ranks among the best tunes from Purple Funk Metropolis which is certainly saying something, cause they’ve created quite the catalog!
