Hot New Local Single: Mike Munson

Mike Munson is a Winona-based guitarist and vocalist deeply rooted in the blues. Recently Munson has been charting a new course in his career and put together a trio featuring Twin Cities mainstays featuring Nick Salisbury on bass and Lars-Erik Larson on drums. When I got my hands on the instrumental “Night Flying Birds” it hit a sweet spot that reminded me of the sounds of Bill Frisell, Magic Sam’s instrumental work and a heaping tablespoon of Jeff Parker. The song’s melody has a quality of going nowhere I expected and everywhere I wanted. As the groove unfolds, the band sounds measured and controlled while hanging on each other’s moves to provide the telepathy you can only get from a group of live musicians. The song clocks in at under three minutes but it offers up its own universe both harmonically and rhythmically. Here’s to more instrumental work from Mike Munson in the future, they’re on to something!
Hot New Local Singles highlights new, local songs. Minnesota has a lot of great jazz, funk, soul, and jazz- adjacent music, and Jazz88 is highlighting what is fresh.
