Sean writes: I was overjoyed to get some new music from the fusion friendly group Society of Chemists in my inbox. The members of Society of Chemists are criminally busy with other projects, but they find the time to keep this one going because the band has such tangible passion for the self-described “chamber jazz fusion” they create. The groove on “transactional kindness” sounds a bit like a more caffeinated version of Keith Jarrett’s work with his European quartet from the 1970s. Pianist Jack Barrett handles the funky and chunky chording without ever veering over the cliff into Will and Grace theme song territory. The author of the tune is saxophonist Stephanie Wieseler and her melody carries a soulful character while also sounding cerebral and adventurous. And the rhythm section of Charlie Bruber and Ben Ehrlich are a slam dunk in the frontcourt with a steady groove that anchors the composition and supports brief solos from Barrett and Wieseler. Word on social media is that the band is decamping to the studio to record a full-length and I am elated to see what they come up with.
