Hot New Local Single: Scott Agster

Hot New Local Single Scott Agster
Sometimes it takes an outsider to really appreciate what is happening in a musical scene. Though he’s been here since 2005, Scott Agster still holds the thrill of the new kid as he tells the larger world what makes our Minneapolis music scene so special. There’s plenty to celebrate here in the Twin Cities, but it’s no surprise that, as a trombone player, Agster started this campaign with a horn-heavy tune titled “Minneapolis Horn Power.”
Agster is the real deal as an arranger and trombone player. His skills are on strong display in the two minute and twenty second powerhouse of a tune that is “Minneapolis Horn Power.” The song opens with the horn section dancing in harmony across the speakers and by the time Gus Sandberg is barking out the bari line we are in some very funky territory. Given Agster’s personal skillset it’s no surprise that he can attract the best of the best to join him, including Prince alum, Kirk Johnson and heavy hitters, Adam Meckler and Christopher Rochester on trumpet and saxophone respectively. The whole band promptly proves why they are all first call players in the scene.
There’s more to come from Scott Agster as he steps into his own as a leader. I for one will be listening cause the man has proven himself to not only be a great player, but also a great curator of musical experiences.
Hot New Local Singles highlights new, local songs. Minnesota has a lot of great jazz, funk, soul, and jazz- adjacent music, and Jazz88 is highlighting what is fresh.
