Hot New Local Single for Wednesday, May 21
In the Twin Cities we are blessed to have a thriving music scene that features great players at every stage of their career. One sign of a thriving scene can be measured in the ability for new players to arrive to town, land a couple gigs and start connecting with audiences and fellow players. That is precisely what is happening for Calvin Caron, a bassist who made the move from Duluth to the Twin Cities in 2024. Caron just released the album Transition Moments alongside Bryan Murray (saxophones), Patrick Adkins (piano) and Abinnet Berhanu (drums) and it’s a great document of a bassist and composer making his mark on a scene with some of the strongest players in the Twin Cities.
The standout track to me is “JBHR.” The fast-moving tune is stocked with energetic rhythm hits that are ably coaxed to the right spots by Berhanu on brushes and sticks. The excitement of the song ratchets up after Caron’s bass solo, when Bryan Murray and Patrick Adkins elect to share a solo spot, first by trading measures but quickly upping the pace to trading single phrases and ultimately to exploring together as a unified solo.
I was ready for the shared saxophone/piano solo to be the peak of the tune, but the song levels up again with an awesome Berhanu solo over an ostinato from the band and only a quick glance back to the opening melody to end the tune. I can almost hear the joy in the studio as Berhanu extends his phrases and adventures around the kit before landing the plane and bringing the song to a close.
