Our hot local single this week comes from saxophonist Matty Harris. Harris connected with Eric Julio Carranza (guitar), Rocky Schulze (bass) and Chris Hepola (drums) to perform Harris’s tune “Farmers Market.” The tune opens with a bass line provided by Schulze that immediately gets me excited for where the tune will go. I caught Ennio Morricone vibes off of the melody/chord changes and the groove itself reminds me of searching psychedelic 6/8 jams from Santana.
The end of the guitar solo brings in some new production elements including some filters that have it sounding like Chris Hepola is playing drums over a New Mexico landline from the 1970s. After that, Matty Harris climbs in on tenor and delivers a patient, searching solo, that builds upon the promise of the melody.
Bravo to Matty Harris and the rest of the group for tracking this one and sharing such a great recording with the Twin Cities and the wider world.
