Summer jams don’t come in one variety. There are the romantic/erotic summer jams that prompt you to pull that special somebody a little closer, sweat be blessed. There are the summer songs that function like a musical ice cube, you drop them into the mix on the hottest day imaginable, and you feel like mother nature turned on the AC. And then there are the hazy jams that embrace the laconic spirit of the summer. You can still feel the heat as the song plays…but it doesn’t bother you. You are at peace with the heat and you are one with music.
That’s the energy I’m getting off this new cut “Quina” from Astronomy Town. The tune is pronounced “key-nuh” and everything is in its right place: the synths, the slide guitar, the single notes picked out by the guitar and bolstered by bass from time to time. The parts move along, never in a hurry, never late. The drummer Robb Lauer does come in late, but in that purposely-behind-the-beat way that J Dilla ushered into our musical universe. As the groove settles into my ears I stop worrying about the metronome, I stop worrying about the thermometer. I stop worrying period and I start relaxing through the summer heat. Thanks for the soundtrack Astronomy Town.
