This week’s Hot New Local Single comes to us from guitarist and composer Ross Clowser. The single is “Untold World” from the new album This Is How We Move Through Time, released September 12th on the local indie label, Aura Vortex records.
The ensemble includes Clowser on guitar, Joe Strachan on piano, Josh Granowski on bass, and Tarek Abdelqader on drums. The music is in a 12/8 rhythm, which gives it kind of an African flavor. The impression I get from the quartet is that they have played together a great deal. The musicians listen carefully to each other. The solos are well paced, and the group plays with great sensitivity and dynamics.
Clowser lists the “Modern Chicago Sound” as an influence, as well what he refers to as the “spiritual jazz” of Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. There is definitely a post-Trane vibe to the music. Clowser recommends his music if you enjoy the music tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson, trumpeter Jaimie Branch, or harpist/pianist Alice Coltrane.
