Hot New Local Single: BZ3 Organ Trio

Hot New Obi

Jazz88 listeners are familiar with the talented musicians featured in this week’s Hot New Local Single. The BZ3 Organ Trio is comprised of Brian Ziemniak on the Hammond B3 organ, David Feilly on guitar, and Kevin Washington on drums. More than a jazz organ combo, they blend elements of funk, soul, and R and B into a distinctive, edgy, and energetic style.

“Baby I Love You” is the first single to come out from their upcoming full-length recording, slated to be released in its entirety next year. The song is a classic soul tune from1967 that was introduced by Aretha Franklin on her Atlantic album Aretha Arrives. The tempo is a little brisker in the BZ3/Cox version, and the pulse is a little more insistent. There’s a brief but swinging Hammond B3 statement from Ziemniak and Cox acquits herself admirably with her soulful interpretation of the song.
In addition to the core group, Daryl Boudreaux adds percussion, and backup vocals are delivered by Julius Collins, Deb Brown and Brian Z.
Incidentally, there’s another classic soul tune with the same title by Ronettes that was recorded in 1963. It’s also worth checking out, but it’s a different composition!
