Trumpeter Jake Baldwin is back with another great solo effort titled Vanishing Point. The album comes out in full in mid-August but we are excited to feature one of the tunes this week! Baldwin tapped the same supporting cast he used on his 2023 release Misc. Items, to explore a new set of beautifully rendered original pieces and an imaginative take on the classic “You Are My Sunshine.” On Vanishing Point, track two is a slow moving number called “Space Heater” that luxuriates in the deep groove supplied by bassist Cody McKinney and drummer Adam Harder Nusbaum. Guitarist Toivo Hannigan is the not-so-secret weapon who has a gift with taking textures and tones from the rock and post-rock world and using the phrasing and chord choices of a jazz player. As Hannigan and Baldwin float atop the rhythm section’s groove, I am reminded of the value of a long-form collaboration. Something great happens when a group stays together for a couple records and a bunch of shows and sees where the chemistry takes them. I am grateful to have another album to enjoy from their great crew of collaborators.
