This week’s hot new local single “Do You Feel Good,” from trumpeter Adam Meckler’s recent hip-hop meets big band project, Sampled.  The album’s ten selections are reworkings of music originally recorded by the Adam Meckler Orchestra. Meckler collaborated with a variety of rappers, producers, vocalists, and instrumentalists to rework his compositions.
“Do You Feel Good” is based on the song “Toulouse,” from the 2020 Adam Meckler Orchestra recording Live in Minneapolis. Meckler sent the source material to Matt Masurka, a Minneapolis based producer and DJ who goes by the name Gigamesh. The original live recording featured vocals by Minneapolis-based rapper Toki Wright. You can hear a sample of Wright asking the crowd “Do You Feel Good?” in the reworked song. Meckler’s wife, Jana Nyberg, is featured on a new vocal chorus with Elyse Jones singing runs behind her. Meckler adds a flugelhorn solo, and finally, pianist Kavyesh Kaviraj plays a keyboard improvisation with additional contributions by saxophonist Lucia Sarmiento.
Meckler currently lives in Houghton, MI in the UP, and teaches jazz studies at Michigan Technological University. Before that, Meckler was based in the Twin Cities and frequently returns to the area to perform and/or record. Peter Solomon will broadcast an interview with Adam Meckler in the days ahead on the Morning Show.
